APAC-SCA Launches Landmark Study on Consumer Attitudes Toward Cellular Agriculture in China

ree

Singapore, 9 July 2025 — The APAC Society for Cellular Agriculture (APAC-SCA) today announced the completion of its latest in-depth market study examining consumer perceptions and acceptance of cellular agriculture products across four Tier 1 cities in China.

This new China report reveals several important insights, including:

  • Only 9.7% of consumers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen are currently aware of the concept of cultivated meat and seafood.

  • Despite so, 76.7% express willingness to try these products at least once, primarily driven by the appeal of “trying new things.”

  • Factors such as unnaturalness, safety concerns, and health doubts are top concerns, hindering acceptance.

  • Consumers place great importance on the involvement of Chinese government laws, regulations, and safety standards, which play a crucial role in shaping perceptions and attitudes toward these products.

The latest consumer report in China’s tier 1 cities complements APAC-SCA’s established research covering South Korea and Japan, offering a regional perspective on market readiness, consumer education needs, and product positioning strategies. Each individual country report is available for purchase at USD 2,000, or as a complete bundle of all three markets for USD 5,000 (choose between English or Mandarin language for the China market within the bundle). The three reports detail approximately 20 pages/slides of detailed data compiled for each market (totalling ~60+ pages for all three reports).

Proceeds from report sales will go directly to APAC-SCA to support further research, educational initiatives, and industry development efforts across the Asia-Pacific region. As a non-profit organisation, APAC-SCA reinvests all funding into advancing the cellular agriculture industry to build pathways towards commercialisation.

"Asia-Pacific is at the forefront of food innovation. Our latest study underscores the most important factors in driving consumer awareness across China and highlights the opportunities for companies to build trust, communicate benefits, and scale responsibly," said Peter Yu, Program Director of APAC-SCA. "These findings will be invaluable for businesses and policymakers shaping the future of sustainable protein in the region."

Call to Action: Organisations interested in accessing the full reports or learning more about APAC-SCA’s research initiatives are invited to contact info@apac-sca.org. Early engagement will help stakeholders gain a competitive advantage in one of the world’s most dynamic markets for cellular agriculture
